To Whom It May Concern:

I understand that Liberty Ferguson is applying for a short-term position assisting in the teaching of art at Rift Valley Academy, and it is my pleasure to recommend Liberty (Ms. Ferguson if you’re nasty) for this position.

Having familiarized myself with RVA through an extensive skimming of the entry in Wikipedia, I was intrigued by the observation that most of the students at RVA “consider themselves third culture kids, in that their cultural identity is neither that of their parents' home country nor that of East Africa but rather is a hybrid of the two.” Liberty is also a “third culture” person—not because of her childhood in the wilds of Wyoming, but because of her capacity for wonder, reflection, and imagination. These capacities are rooted in gifts both intellectual and spiritual. Intellectually, Liberty possesses a multitude of strengths, with the most notable being a combination of humility and curiosity that inclines her both to acknowledge the lenses through which she sees the world and to explore the lenses worn by others. Spiritually, Liberty’s fascination with God’s creation and her compassion for people find expression in both her creative work and her polite conversation. Introspective by nature, Liberty is fueled by periods of solitude followed by meaningful conversation, punctuated by the opportunity to cause physical harm and/or good-natured humiliation. I can think of no one better suited for work with missionary children.

Additionally, you are fortunate to have Liberty serving your organization prior to her upcoming marriage. For while I have heard only good things about her fiancee, Mr. Museveni (or Moose Veins, as my children call him), and while I wish Liberty all the joys of married life, I doubt he is good enough for her. I will, of course, choose to trust her judgment on such matters, just as I hope you will trust her judgment with your children.

If I can be of any more assistance as you consider Liberty’s application, I would be most glad to do so.

Sincerely,

Greg Dyer

Would it be possible for me to meet Mr. Moose Veins before nuptials?

You know what? I'm hoping I meet him before the marriage too. Things could be awkward otherwise.
